2010 Grants Finalists

Seventeen regional organizations have requested funds for 19 grants totalling $296,893. In addition to this page, you can download a pdf (406 kb) of this list here.

The following projects are eligible to receive funding from 1% for the Tetons in 2010. Following 1% for the Tetons’s first annual “Sustainability Grants Conference” on Saturday, May 8, finalist organizations will have 28 days – from Sunday, May 9 through Saturday, June 5 – to raise the funds needed for their project. Those which receive 100 percent of the funds they’ve requested by 11:59:59 pm on Saturday, June 5 will receive that amount from 1% for the Tetons. Those which do not will be considered by the 1% for the Tetons grants committee during 1%’s second round of funding. All awards will be announced in late June.

It is essential to the long-term sustainability of our ecosystem, that children develop an emotional investment in the environment. The Center of Wonder provides nature-based programs, rich in hands-on activities that allow children to connect to nature and begin to understand the unique relationships between natural resources, economy and humans.

 

Removing Lead from our Wildlife and Wildlands

Building upon our 2009 pilot project, we are proposing to significantly expand the scope and breadth of our education and outreach efforts to reduce ammunition as a source of lead poisoning for all wildlife. We plan to build a sustainable, long-term solution that will serve as a model for wide-spread change.

 

TreeFight

Treefight is an initiative to aid the whitebark pines of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, as they fall victim to the pine beetle epidemic and spread of white pine blister rust. Treefight has three objectives: 1) Educate the public about the circumstances of these epidemics, and possible solutions. 2) Coordinate a well organized, scientifically vetted, volunteer effort to apply solutions. 3) Provide the informational blueprint and technological mechanism for future, similar efforts. This application is for a Treefight Pilot Program, whereby we will implement and test an initial, small-scale Treefight campaign in the summer of 2010.

 

Teton Valley Water-Smart School

WaterSmart Schools will provide water conservation education for Teton Valley K-12 teachers and students, and promote a community culture of wise water use. Friends of the Teton River, in partnership with Teton County School District #401, will design and implement water conservation curriculum and teacher professional development in local schools.

 

GTNP reusable water bottle program

Grand Teton National Park will retrofit existing water fountains to include water bottle filling stations, educate visitors about greenhouse gas emissions through interpretive signs near the fountains, and promote behavioral change of visitors to reuse bottles, thereby reducing the amount of plastic entering the waste and recycling system.

 

Restoring GTNP whitebark pines

Whitebark pine have experienced considerable mortality as a result of a recent cyclic epidemic of blister rust fungus and native mountain pine beetle across the Rocky Mountain west, exacerbated by climatic warming trends. This project will take seedlings, identify planting sites and replant whitebark pine in Grand Teton National Park.

SummerQuest: Hands-on Environmental Education
Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival (WY)

This pilot summer school enrichment project brings ecology and biological science to life for 250+ kindergarten-8th grade students and identified at-risk-youth, utilizing public lands as the “living field lab” for discovery while learning alongside artists, writers and scientists involved in summer research.

 

Soundscapes of the Tetons

Vertical Harvest of Jackson Hole

The goal of Vertical Harvest is to extend the growing season in Jackson Hole and develop a local venue for growing produce in downtown Jackson that can be sold in the community and used for a variety local food programs. This initiative will work to reduce our dependence on outside food sources and promote the sustainability goals of the Town of Jackson.

 

River Ambassador Program
Snake River Fund (WY)

A River Ambassador for the wilson-south park section of the river will promote responsible use of the river by directing traffic; reducing user conflicts; promoting a code of ethics for river users; collect pertinent user data; provide education relating to river etiquette, aquatic invasive species, catch and release practices, appropriate wildlife viewing practices, and leave no trace principles.

 

Teton Boulder Project

The Teton Boulder Project is a grass-roots Partnership seeking to celebrate the past, present and future of Teton climbing by constructing a bouldering park at the base of Snow King Mountain. The park has Three Objectives – Education, Recreation and Inspiration.

 

The Candyland Trail

Construction of 7,000 linear feet of trail beginning at the Jimmy’s Mom Trail and terminating at the head of the Parallel Trail in order to separate users to eliminate budding user conflict and safety issues.

 

Port-O-Potty Owl projects
Teton Raptor Center (WY)

The PoO-PoO Project will mitigate small owl mortality due to entrapment in vault toilets throughout U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and National Park Service (NPS) lands connected to the greater Teton area by retrofitting 85 units with vent screens to eliminate exposure to accidental entrapment.

 

Spread Creek Reconnect Project

The project will reconnect approximately 40-60 miles of native trout habitat in the Upper Snake River drainage via the removal of the existing Spread Creek water diversion structure, installation of a fish-friendly diversion structure, and restoration of the stream channel in the project area.

 

American Pika Distribution

Pikas, charismatic denizens of alpine ecosystems, are indicators of changing environmental conditions. Little is known about pika distributions in Wyoming. We propose an integrated research and education project that will advance conservation of pikas in the Tetons and enhance the community’s scientific literacy by engaging volunteers in pika research efforts.
